A Powerful Southern French Red Great with Beef Stew

We had some more of the Bifteck Marchand de Vin (Beef Stew in Red Wine) from the previous evening (see 16 September).  On that occasion the Spanish red we tried was far better with it than the French one. This time we decided to go for a more powerful Southern French red.  We chose Cabalié 2009, a Syrah-based blend from the Sunday Times Wine Club.  This is a powerful and rich wine with spiciness, blackberries and a juicy sweetness to it.  It was certainly up to the stew and was a very good match.
